Age Of Terror

Whilst political violence has always been with us, in the late 1960s it came of age. Terrorists, realising the power of the media, began to hijack planes and target civilians. The Age of Terror was born.

Searching and moving interviews, vibrant archive footage and atmospheric dramatisation combine with Peter Taylor's remarkable accumulation of journalistic experience to bring gripping stories of terrorism to life. Each episode focuses on a particular terrorist attack, and covers it in detail from the first signs of trouble, through the event itself and on to its aftermath.

Weapons Races

For more than a century the breakneck speed of technological development has powered a series of Weapons Races which have transformed modern warfare.

Sometimes it is the development and deployment of a completely new idea like the first radar controlled air defence system, the ballistic missile, or the nuclear bomb. At others it is a combination of breakthroughs which produces a dramatic new weapon like the jet fighter, the battletank or the aircraft carrier. In every case it means that potential or actual enemies have to react with their own versions or countermeasures in order to combat a particular threat, thus starting a competitive spiral which in some cases has brought the world to the edge of total disaster.

This series looks at eight of the most significant of these races, from the original concepts which overturned existing military thinking to the most advanced versions of each weapon which are in service today.
